What’s Your Plastic Footprint?
March 9, 2012
Plastics are used throughout the world for a broad number of reasons. Although plastic is certainly a globally important product, there are many environmental concerns associated with its use (illustrated below). Becker Underwood is committed to being a leader of sustainable business practices. It is our mission to engage in practices that promote and sustain our business, customers, suppliers and community in ways that also protect and positively enhance our impact on the environment, society and our company. Plastic is an essential material in our business, but it is our goal to use it more wisely. In an effort to reduce our raw plastic footprint, our Saskatoon facility will be switching to biodegradable plastic overbags for its sterile peat products. The biodegradable bags (Eco-One™) will reduce the current plastic overbags thickness from 1.75 mil to 1.5 mil, reducing the facility’s raw plastic footprint by 14 percent this year (based on approximately 456,000 bags projected for 2012). This is just one step in our journey to becoming a NET positive™ company.
